Edward Carpenter (1844-1929) was a pioneering campaigner for homosexual equality. He was also a writer on socialist and green politics, a supporter of women’s rights and a poet.

To coincide with the queerupnorth International Festival 2008, a small but choice exhibition at The John Rylands University Library tells Carpenter’s story through letters, photographs and publications taken from the archive of his friend Charles Sixsmith.

The Carpenter exhibition will run for the duration of the queerupnorth International Festival 2008.

But are identities a crucial form of support and solidarity for minorities - or does our obsession with identity set us on a path to division and hatred?

Singer and author Billy Bragg will be joining The Independent's Johann Hari, feminist activist Linda Bellos and philosopher Julian Baggini, to debate the issues.

And Then He Was A She premiered at Salford Museum & Art Gallery in May 2007 and has since been shown at Drill Hall in London from October to November 2007.

There are plans to tour And Then He Was A She –Paintings of Holly Woodlawn by Sadie Lee to other venues including Iceland, Germany and Slovenia.

Premiered at Contact, Manchester, May 2006 and was nominated for Best New Play at the Manchester Evening News Theatre Awards 2006.

The production had a spring & an autumn tour in the UK in 2006 and toured again for a final time in 2007.

10 Days on Earth was co-commissioned by queerupnorth (Manchester, UK); BITE (London, UK); CanStage (Toronto, Canada); and Wiener Festwochen (Vienna, Austria).

Premiered in Toronto, Canada in April 2006 and has toured to venues throughout Canada, Austria, Australia, New Zealand and the UK. UK appearances took place at BITE (The Barbican, London, April 2007), and queerupnorth (Library Theatre, Manchester, May 2007).
